John was my friend, colleague, kindred soul. I often felt my job was to explain you and your vision to the world. Many did not see perceive your greatness or value your words. Let your soul be at peace now my brother.

John Shuler was a mentor and friend. At the NIDL meeting in May, John referred to government information librarians as family. I feel like John was not only a family member, but a patriarch of the community. In the ten years Iâ??ve been in the government information community, I always looked forward to working with John. He ignited a passion for the profession in me and inspired my work locally and nationally. He preached the gospel of government information: synthesizing what was most important about what we do and how we can meet the changing world of civics and librarianship. At that last meeting, John had renewed energy and a positive outlook personally and professionally. I will treasure that memory of him. He will be greatly missed.

John was a professor of mine about 5 years ago and I also thought of him as a trusted mentor. I will continue to be inspired by the memories of his passion and dedication to the next generation of government information professionals. I am saddened the world has lost a genuine, sincere, bold, yet honest and kind visionary.
