OBITUARY

Sidney Arthur Winters

Sidney A. Winters, age 95, resident of Highland Park for 61 years. Loving and devoted husband of the late Lorraine Winters for 69 years. Caring father of Lois (Dr. R Grant) Rowe, Ellen (Bruce) Miller, Gregg and Rich (Jane) Winters; wonderful and loving grandfather to Dr. Patrick (Dr. Rachel Schattman) Rowe, Julia Rowe Taylor (Richard), Stephen Rowe, Montgomery, Daniel, Kenneth and Jesse Miller, Michael, Beth and Laura Winters; adoring great-grandfather of Jacob and Lillian Taylor and Amelia Rowe. He was a loving Uncle to 7 nieces, nephews and their families He was preceded in death by his sister Marcy Goldfine, father Louis Weinberg and mother Mollie Weinberg whom he adored. Sidney worked for over 70 years at Acorn Corrugated Box Company originally located in Bedford Park. Except for a 3-year stint in the US Army during World War II (he was stationed in Spokane, Washington where he met his future wife Lorraine), Sid’s only employer was Acorn, where he worked his way up from a boy loading boxes on the loading dock in 1939 to Executive Vice President of Sales at his retirement in 1998. A consummate salesman, Sid, with his warm and engaging personality, was a tireless worker who was passionate about corrugated, designing many Point-of-Purchase displays as well as storage file boxes, which are used today. In addition to his family, he also enjoyed golf for many years and was an auto enthusiast. He was a founding member of Ravinia Green Country Club in Riverwoods. Sid was treasurer for many years of the Seagram’s American Legion post and a lifetime member of the Disabled War Veterans. He also served as treasurer of the Society of Packaging Engineers. He was a founding member of Congregation Solel in Highland Park where he remained a member until his death. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Jewish United Fund or the Veteran’s Honor Flight.

We would like to give loving thanks to longtime family caregiver Evelyn Darko who was truly an angel to our family. Many thanks to Denise Williams for her weekend caregiving and flexibility over the past couple years. Accord Hospice provided the family with much needed comfort and support with both our parents, who passed away within seven months of each other. May their memories be a blessing.

Funeral service will commence on Wednesday, June 15, 2016 at 1 PM at Congregation Solel, 1301 Clavey Road, Highland Park, IL. Interment will follow at Westlawn Cemetery.
